Proxy Filtering Policy
By default, internet web access provided by MDECA is filtered using the
Bess Filtering for Schools product from N2H2 .
This is in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
The
N2H2 URL checker can be used to determine a web site's category.
The following categories are blocked by the default MDECA filter
Hate/Discrimination
Illegal
Lingerie
Loophole
Murder/Suicide
Nudity
Personal Information
Personals
Pornography
Profanity
School Cheating Information
Search Terms
Sex
Swimsuits
Tasteless/Gross
Tobacco
Violence
Weapons
Web Mail *
Web Page Hosting

* AOL email can be accessed via the  webmail.aol.com link.

The following categories are marked as exceptions by the default MDECA filter.  A web site categorized as such  will be unblocked even though it might also be categorized into one of the above blocked categories.  An example of this would be a sex education web site.

Education
For Kids
History
Medical
Moderated
Text/Spoken Only

The MDECA Default Web Filtering
can be circumvented or modified by only three methods.

1-
Upon contact MDECA will immediately block any obvious pornographic web site.

2- A filtering override account may be issued.  This requires the submission of an override form, dated and signed by the superintendent.  Upon receipt of the form, MDECA will contact the user or school authority, whoever is appropriate, with the override account information and instructions on its use.

3-
A district may choose to maintain a custom filter that may specifically override any of the MDECA default filter settings including the blocking/unblocking of individual web sites .  A district must designate an individual who will be responsible for this custom filter.  That person should contact Chris Knodel at MDECA (knodel@mdeca.org, phone 937-223-4980)
