Update P148 version 01
Course ID Translation

Parameter P148 version 01 must be updated with EMIS Translated Course ID coding for the new school year. The information on P148 will be used to create staff class master records in EMIS. On P148 you must enter the existing SIS course ID and the EMIS subject code that the SIS course ID number is to be translated into.

To construct the proper EMIS course number, first obtain the EMIS subject code for the course from Appendix C of the EMIS Guide.  Then append the course type code (type codes are found in the current EMIS Guide).  A copy of the current EMIS Guide and EMIS Appendix C can be found at ODE’s EMIS web page: http://www.ode.state.oh.us/emis/

It is important to verify that you use the proper subject codes from Appendix C of the current EMIS Guide.

Example of P148 Course ID Translation  -  Version: 01

SIS Course ID represents the course ID from CRSE.

Translated Course ID is broken down into four fields.
0602301R00, the code listed in line 1 on the P148 screen example,  translates as follows:

  1. Positions 1-6 (060230) represent the subject code from Appendix C of the EMIS guide.

  2. Position 7 (1) represents the course level.

  3. Position 8-10 (R00) represents the course type from the EMIS guide.  If left blank it is assumed the course is regular instruction and that the course type should be R00.

  4. Position 11 (blank) represents the semester code override.  This field is only used  for those courses which may be a 6- or 12-week course, and the master schedule defines the class as a semester or all year course.

P148 EMIS Coding Example
Courses in French are labeled as follows:

Course Description Subject Code
(EMIS Appendix C)
Course Level Course Type
(EMIS Guide)
FRENCH I

060230

1

R00

FRENCH II

060230

2

R00

The eleventh position of the Translated Course ID is used as a semester override field. The semester code is determined from the TERM fields on the SIS class master schedule.  The semester override field would not need to be filled in for all courses - only those courses that are different from what CTRMEMIS can determine.

Example: A two-term school that offers a six-week course. On CMST this course might be defined as running term one.  CTRMEMIS will define this as a first semester-only course, however it should be reported in EMIS as a six- week course.  In this example the six-week course should have an EMIS semester code of "6."  Enter "6" in the semester override field on P148.
